The fall bean known as an October Bean can be a rarity these days, but these heritage seeds are still around to be grown. Mom had them stashed in her freezer. They can be planted later in the season, they will ripen between the end of summer and the first frost. That might be right about now!

Coated in spiny bumps and warts, this spiky little lollypop is the Lycoperdon perlatum, considered to be a good edible mushroom that you can batter in egg and breadcrumbs and fry like popcorn shrimp. Mostly known as the gem-studded puffball, some call them the warted puffball, or poor man's sweetbread, or the devil's snuff-box, or... wolf farts. Who's hungry for some deep-fried wolf farts? Anyone?

Ahhh, now the crisp, cool fall evenings are coming more frequently, and what a perfect time for a little gathering ‘round the fire pit? Stack the logs, strike a match, and maybe get the skewers for some hot dogs or marshmallows. Or just sit and stare into the smoky abyss of the Round.

Barrel-aged beer is produced by brewers around the United States to achieve a variety of flavorful effects. Tannins and lactones of the wood are imparted to the beer as it ages over a period of time. Barrels that previously held bourbon, whisky, or wine are frequently used to add other flavors, with bourbon barrels by far the most commonly used. Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout was one of the first bourbon barrel-aged beers made in 1992.
