The rocky shores of Portland Head in Cape Elizabeth, Maine has been a strategic signaling point since 1776 when the town first posted 8 soldiers as look-out for any attack by British ships. By 1791 a lighthouse had been built with lamps to alert ships of the shoreline. Over the years lenses and lighting technology improvements were made and it remained in operation until 1989. This historic triple-lens naval signal lamp was another type of signaling light used for maritime communication.

Now that it's made a successful landing on this grey marble terrain, the Kitchen Reconnaissance Rover has extended its communication antenna and will deploy solar panels to begin its survey mission. The tomato-like probe will explore this alien environment and send data back to Home Base where it will be analyzed for past or present activity. Scientists speculate that there may be vast deposits of water, vegetables, canned goods and ice cream sandwiches in the cabinetry and refrigeration containers located around the perimeter of the landing area. Signs of intelligent life?
