Sunlight breaks through the clouds over Little Sunapee Lake and an afternoon rain-shower paints a spectrum of color around the sky. Yours is the only rainbow you see. Because of the movement of millions of raindrop prisms, refracted light is constantly changing, so what I see is different. Where the rainbow meets the horizon, it is almost complete in reflected Roundness. If we row far enough out, maybe we can pass through.

WALKING THE ‘BURGH WEEK

Red symbolizes resilience, and is a color associated with Juneteenth, the Federal holiday commemorating when the last enslaved African Americans were freed by Union troops in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. A celebration of freedom with festivals, parades, barbecues and Black history, it is tradition to serve red food and drink such as strawberries, soda and red velvet cake.

Guarding the entrances of the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History is the “Noble Quartet”, four large seated figures sculpted in bronze by John Massey Rhind in 1907. Pittsburgh-based industrialist Andrew Carnegie commissioned Rhind to create four icons of creative expression. Each figure represents a primary discipline of the museum: Michelangelo for art, Shakespeare for literature, Bach for music, and Galileo for science. Here, at Galileo’s feet is Atlas holding up the Round celestial heavens, while Galileo measures and charts the universe.

The Polish Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh has been an ever-evolving place for generations. In the early 1800s it was called Springfield Farms and the property of English landowners. As industry developed, immigration increased as jobs in the steel mill and rail yards grew. The area was called Herron Hill. Polish immigrants began arriving to the city in the late 1800s and became the predominant population of the neighborhood by the 1960s, alongside a diversity of Irish, German and African-American residents as well.
