Guarding the entrances of the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History is the “Noble Quartet”, four large seated figures sculpted in bronze by John Massey Rhind in 1907. Pittsburgh-based industrialist Andrew Carnegie commissioned Rhind to create four icons of creative expression. Each figure represents a primary discipline of the museum: Michelangelo for art, Shakespeare for literature, Bach for music, and Galileo for science. Here, at Galileo’s feet is Atlas holding up the Round celestial heavens, while Galileo measures and charts the universe.
