Around the world Mother’s Day is celebrated in various ways and with various flowers. In 1908 when Anna Jarvis started the day in America, she gave out white carnations which were her mother's favorite flowers. On the other side of the globe Australians celebrate the day with chrysanthemums, abundant flowers in May which also end conveniently in "mum".

Feeling Lucky? Have you stared into your bowl full of oat-based cereal shapes this morning? There may be some sweet modified cornstarch, dextrose and gelatin marshmallow-like treats hiding in there. Back in the 60’s you’d only find pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers. But through the years a revolving line-up of other shapes and color combinations have kept coming — blue diamonds, purple horseshoes, red balloons, rainbows, unicorns. What now? Is that an abominable snowman? A pink pet rock? A leprechaun’s underwear? Magically delicious…

The wispy, feathery parachutes of a dandelion puff float away with the slightest breeze, carrying its seed cargo far distances. Unless it is frozen in a cut metal sculptural door, of course!

Though shaped like a little umbrella, the feathery bristles of a dandelion puff close up when the rains come. The radial structure of each little umbrella is attached to a circular plate called an actuator. The atmospheric humidity in the air will swell the actuator to control the opening and closing of the umbrella. This actually helps prevent water from getting individual seeds wet by trapping an air bubble inside.

This lion-faced manhole cover design marks the location of The Benedum–Trees Building on Fourth Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The nineteen story building was built in 1905 by Caroline Jones Machesney, and was called the Machesney Building until 1913 when she sold it to Joe Trees and Michael Late Benedum, founders of the Benedum Trees Oil Company who had relocated their business headquarters in the city. A lion is a symbol of power, wealth and protection and can be seen in many places on architecture along Fourth Ave.
