That’s a mighty nice topiary ball you got there. Who makes your cuts? That boxwood didn’t sculpt itself now, did it? This place has been around since 1909, so you gotta know a few topiarists. Looks a lot like what the Duchess of Sutherland has in Herefordshire. So, who did it? Oh, what sad times are these when even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress. Was it Roger? Roger the Shrubber?

The Big Fish landed on Donegall Quay in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1999. At 33 feet long, the giant salmon sculpture is a celebration of the return of fish to the River Lagan, and is cladded with ceramic tiles imprinted with text and images of the history of the city. Also called The Salmon of Knowledge, it is based on a character in the story "The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn,” where a fish eats some hazelnuts that had fallen in the Well of Wisdom and thereby gains all the knowledge of the world. Word is… if you pat or kiss the sculpture you too will gain knowledge and good luck.

To prepare for offspring, a Bromeliad mother will form a small pool called a "tank" in the center of her vase-shaped rosette leaf structure. The accumulation of water in the tank provides a nesting environment for the little peep to soon appear. Both parents contribute to feeding -- though the mother does much more -- and for the first few days they alternate turns gathering earthworms or large insects that they will then regurgitate partly digested into the eager little baby bloom. See? The little peep is so hungry.

The blooming stages of a Scabiosa flower are quite the transformation. With a spiky, round, dome-like center you may be curious what the rough, itchy ball will become. Each small nodule contains many small florets, and as it blooms its full, pincushiony costume of delicate petals is revealed!

Chew on some wood fiber for awhile and your saliva will break it down into a pulpy paste perfect for plastering a few hexagonal wall panels.
