Round Museum

The cool thing about the Hoberman Sphere is that it grows! Throughout the day it undulates above the heads of visitors at Liberty Science Center. Designed by artist/engineer Chuck Hoberman in 1992, this complex structure contains hundreds of scissor-like connectors allowing it to expand from a 4.5 foot diameter up to a whopping 18 feet.

"LUCENT (2015), commissioned by The Hearn Company, derives its name from the Latin 'lucere' meaning 'to shine'. Created by internationally-renowned sculptor Wolfgang Buttress, this artwork represents the 3,106 brightest stars visible with the naked eye in the northern hemisphere. Simple and elegant, LUCENT measures 14' in diameter and is illuminated by fibre-optics to create an ambient, pulsing glow."

Jeepers, I don’t believe my peepers, Bob’s and Ruth’s old timey diner has one humdinger of a rusty fire alarm! I’m tellin ya, it’s smaller than a trashcan lid but a heckuva lot bigger than a pie plate, that’s for sure. Why, if some ruffians had pulled a little flimflammery and it went off during dinner, it sure as shootin’ would’ve made quite a racket. Now, let’s order an ice cream cone over at the window and skeedaddle!

The holiday season is upon us, so what festive drink are you thinking about? Eggnog... is just so... typical. So how about a rum punch? A little summer in December? Get yourself a big punch bowl, four different types of rum, orange and pineapple juices, grenadine and a little lime, and jam some cloves into the fruit Rounds to garnish. Add a couple aspirin in the morning.

Well, it's not a party if you don't break out the Chex Mix! The cereal has been around since the 1930s and the Mix introduced in 1950s to fulfill the rapid growth in television snack options. Now in the 2020s there are around 30 different flavor varieties off the shelf, and many more if you make it yourself. I spy some Wheat, Rice, and Corn Chex. Pretzels, cheese crackers and nuts. Garlic and onion powder seasonings, worcestershire sauce, and butter. Don't forget the butter.

The popularity of the South American açai berry has grown so much in the U.S. over the past decade that you can find it in lots of places in smoothies, powders and bowls. Frequently compared to the blueberry as a healthy superfood, the açai has a different taste — more like a tart cranberry than sweet — and is much more expensive. Which may explain why blueberries are frequent stand-ins for them in an “açai” bowl.

In the carton of large farm-fresh eggs, this one looked a bit oversized — it kept the lid from closing tightly. Lo and behold, it’s a double sunny side up morning! With double yolkin’ odds at a tiny 0.001% chance, cracking open this rarity is believed to be a sign of good luck. Or that you’re pregnant with twins. OK, then! Good luck!

Here at The Carrie Blast Furnaces the door to the forced-air stove is closed, which is a good thing because it can be a few thousand degrees in there. Hot enough to melt iron, for sure. Built in 1884 and operating for nearly 100 years along the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at its peak the massive 168 acre site produced more than 1,000 tons of iron a day in the heart of the American steel industry. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

When the mat rolls out Delilah will magically appear, ready to lead the morning yoga asanas. She usually starts off with the “Half Pigeon” or maybe “Half Lord of the Fishes,” though she’d rather be eating them. Breathe in. Exhale. Should we do “Ball with a Kickstand”? Just stick your leg out to the side so your little Round body won’t roll over, OK? Breathe out. Ah, yeah. There’s the “Disdainful Glare.” Namaste, lil’ kitty.
