Round Museum

Every morning the Twin Lake Village breakfast menu features a rotating variety of pastries — blueberry or cranberry muffins, crumb cake, cinnamon buns. Today is Donut Day. As every Tuesday has been for more than 120 summers. Tradition is as delicious as it is Round.

Inside the row of cylinders of a mud dauber wasp nest, you will find the dauber larvae snuggled up tight, just waiting to be fed by their parents. While Mom was busy building this organ-pipe architectural marvel completely out of mud and hunting around the eaves of the front porch ceiling for delicious spiders, mosquitoes and aphids, Dad has been hanging around the hole to pass the food along and take all the credit. Don’t say I never did nothin’ for ya, kid.

The sun is up this Sunday morning. Soon the Schmidt tennis tournament will be starting, an annual August tradition held for 46 years now. There is a seat with the best view reserved for you right here at courtside.

Would you like a little sour cream for your baked potato? Black olives on your salad? Mustard pickles? Relish? Well, pass your plate to the Jelly Girl, because six options are waiting to be served! Since the earliest American history, the relish tray -- or jelly tray -- has been a traditional pre-dinner food course with appetizer or condiment choices for dinner entrees. Take one down and pass it around!

For more than 100 years this old Maple tree has stood tall outside the Twin Lake Village hotel. At some point during that long history an injury or fungal infection to the tree caused this burr, or burl, to form into a rounded outgrowth, like a knob on a magical door. Because a burr maple grows in a twisted and interlocked knot, it develops a dense “wild grain” that’s very unique and highly prized by woodworkers and artists.

From one end, a 500 gallon, 10-ft long cigar-shaped propane tank looks very Round. This tank services the TLV hotel kitchen. You’d be interested to know that though it’s called a 500 tank, it’s only filled up to 400, following the “80% rule” for a cushion of space for potential expansion of the liquid fuel.
