With a bit of dead wood fiber, waspy ingenuity, and a lot of spit you could build a little Round golf ball-sized home in no time. The paper wasp constructs a honeycomb-like nesting structure inside papery walls that are completely water-resistant and protected by a chemical secretion that repels ants. All that, and yet no cable or internet.

The R key sits in the second row of this vintage Royal typewriter. The beautiful raised Round keys -- with a long lever connecting to a corresponding type bar that strikes the platen -- give all ten fingers a work out. Seemingly in random order, A S D F J K L ; are the "home keys" for every trained typist's fingers. But in this era of smart phones and pads, though the home keys are in the same location, the tiny one-dimensional digital touch makes everyone into two-fingered hunt-and-peckers.

A monster colony of genetically identical honey mushrooms has existed in the Blue Mountains of Oregon for more than 2,400 years and now covers at least four square miles. Not in my backyard!
