These gum balls are neither sweet nor chewy. The seeds hidden inside the multi-capsular spherical pod of the sweet gum tree may be a delicious treat for squirrels, finches and chipmunks, but to step on a bed of these spike balls would take the will of a firewalker or some extra thick plantar calluses.
