Round Museum

Like a heavy metal spider web, this geodesic ceiling hovers over a central access point at the Universal CityWalk complex in Orlando. At any moment Spider-Man could come swinging through the Round.

The ebb and flow of modernity transforms the industrial into art. Originally built as a train station and hotel for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris, this building was re-developed as the Musée d’Orsay in 1986, a museum of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art. This clock facing out the fifth floor in the northeast corner frames the Sacre Coeur along the River Seine in a Round of time.

Soon enough drones will be bringing us everything down from the sky -- pizza, packages, bicycle wheels. Ten feet up at the ceiling, this suspended sculpture floats and rotates in drone-like buzz, casting colorful shapes and shadows on the walkway below.

The bronze sculpted gates at the Charles Addams Fine Arts Hall on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania feature a variety of cast hands working with different art tools, including this Round roll of tape. Created in 2003 by sculptor Mark Carsten Lueders, MFA '93, the gates were a gift of The Kelly Family.

This old oak barrel has done its work. After a handful of wine vintages have taken their turns fermenting within, the rich vanilla, butter and spice flavors leached from the wood are just about spent. So its about time for a little retirement recycling project. Sure, an end table or shelf is an easy out. But how about a cabinet? Sink, maybe? Fire pit? Wine rack!
