Next to a window shutter, a little cast iron cluster of Round grapes grows out of the brick. Called a "shutter dog" or a "tie back", this architectural flourish and functional necessity rotates into place to hold the shutter open. The structure of a grape cluster is its own complex marvel -- conical or cylindrical or winged -- consisting of the cane (main shoot), peduncle (connecting stalk), rachis (small stem branches), pedicels (individual cap stems), and the grapes, of course.

In ancient Greece, Milo of Croton demonstrated his by lifting and carrying a calf every day. As the calf grew into a cow, Milo kept lugging that thing around town. In various prehistoric tribes, the traditional strongman test was to lift a special rock, appropriately dubbed a "manhood stone." The prize? Well... manhood, of course, but the first to lift it gets their name on it. Hey man, bet you can't pick up that rock.

Looking up from the courtyard at Henry's 12th Street Tavern, a Round window hints at the brewery history of Portland, Oregon. With over 100 beers on tap, Henry's is named for Henry Weinhard who purchased the Liberty Brewery in 1862 and became the sole proprietor two years later. The Tavern is located in the original Brewhouse building of what became the Blitz-Weinhard Brewery, which brewed beer on site for more than 140 years and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Round that started spinning in nightclubs in the early 1920s eventually became a glittering disco inferno of the 1970s. There was a mirror ball above every dance floor, producing complex, swirling displays of light from hundreds of reflective facets, and adding some flash to the boogie nights. But if you're going for flash, you might as well go big. Madonna's 2-ton glitter ball for her 2006 tour was covered in 2 million dollars worth of Swarovski crystals. U2 climbed in and out of their giant lemon disco ball during their 1997 PopMart shows.
