Round Museum

The great heavy beasts of construction equipment tear away at the earth, knocking down walls and chewing through foundations. Backhoes and Trenchers and Bulldozers prowl around on their spiky track pads, moving tons of rock, dirt and sand with claws and blades. Oh my.

After you take a ferry across New York Harbor to Liberty Island, and walk up many flights of stairs through the Statue of Liberty pedestal, and exit on the patio atop the pedestal, but just before you go into the statue to start the 20 story climb to the crown, is this spot. For the most part, the Round Museum has a virtual existence, navigating the pixels and pages of a digital sphere. But in reality, our Round home is right here in The Corn Exchange National Bank Building in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia. Built in 1903, it was designed by Newman & Harris in the Georgian Revival style, and became part of the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 1976. Nice ornate Round window there.

What sort of beast arises from the patio to snatch the spherical light with its claw? Is it a Common Welsh Green Dragon? Or an Antipodean Opaleye? A Romanian Longhorn, or a Peruvian Vipertooth? Whatever the beast, let's just hope it won't breathe fire all over the outdoor furniture. That's going to ruin the dinner party.

The competition got pretty intense down at the Guilford Fair. You could say it was definitely more exciting than watching grass grow. And when the dust settled, this Round roll was voted best hay in all the land. It will surely show off its 'Special Award' ribbon to all those regular old hay rolls in the barn. You can clearly see why.

"The camera never lies," they say. An image captured is a precise record of a moment in the camera's eye. But, of course, that is not exactly true. "Mirrors are perpetually deceitful," they say. They reflect only what your mind believes it sees. And, of course that is not really true either. So, if you look at a mirror through a camera, well... is seeing believing?

Along this alleyway is a chain of rusty iron bollards on the sidewalk, very terrestrial satellites orbiting Fireman's Hall Museum. From the Round view, this one appears to be a moon of Jupiter or Saturn, the swirling pattern of paint and rust almost like a harsh landscape of liquid methane and bedrock ice beneath a dense, hazy atmosphere. Could it be hiding signs of life? Maybe an ant or a fly. But no aliens.

Most lawn balls are meant to be left in the garage with the jacks, wickets and mallets, or outside on the bowling green. But there are a few perfect lawn balls destined for display on a pedestal in your living room. No bowling on grandmother's antique Persian carpet, though.
