Today's ferry ride to Chiloé Island off the coast of Chile takes about 30 minutes, which is just the perfect amount of time to contemplate Chilean travel history while gazing out from the bathroom porthole. Up until air flights were established in 2012, the boat was the only way to get to Chiloé for more than 7,000 years. In the 16th Century, Chono peoples navigated the waters of Chiloé Archipelago in small canoes called dalcas. The archaeological evidence does not suggest these ancient boats had bathrooms.

Weighing in at a mere 11 tons, this giant Harris Corliss flywheel is an impressive Round artifact representing the history of Franklin, New Hampshire. Installed in 1911 in the Franklin Mills textile facility formerly in this spot along the Winnipesaukee River, the wheel was a central part of a steam engine that cranked out 1250 HP for an 800 KW generator providing electricity for all the machinery.

Up high on the trunk of this old tree, a Round knot bears ghostly witness to a branch that once was. A scar of toughened trunk wood forms around the joint where the branch once grew, a weathered ring that helps protect the tree's growth.
