A January snowstorm has moved across the country. In Pittsburgh, 10 inches of accumulation blanketed the city. The fritted glass dome of the Welcome Center at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has collected drifts in the panes of the Round 34-feet above you. In the center, the swirling Goldenrod, Teal and Citron Chandelier created by renowned glass sculptor Dale Chihuly provides a warming beauty inside the glasshouse.

The Avro Lancaster was a large four-engine bomber of the British Air Force, delivering more bombs than any other Allied aircraft during World War II. There were more than 7,300 built and more than half of those were lost in action. This pinion gear is a landing mechanism from the crash of the "G" for George bomber that occurred in Bavegem, Belgium on August 13, 1944. Nineteen-year old Tom Young was flight engineer and co-pilot that day, and survived with five other crew members. The pilot, John Lawrie, sacrificed himself for their escape.

When water freezes, intricate patterns begin to emerge. Water molecules are angled and when frozen typically form into a hexagonal crystal lattice starting from a single nucleation point. But depending on various conditions such as purity, temperature, humidity, wind, or the presence of imperfections, other unique forms will occur. Dendritic growth is when crystals form into branching, tree-like or feathery shapes. Wonder what conditions lead to these Rounds?
