Round Museum

Grandma certainly likes to experiment with her desserts. Some might think an orange jello ring chock full o' carrots and pineapple might remain untouched for the whole family reunion, jiggling away on a lonely serving platter. And yet, without even being removed from the mold half of it is gone!? Who has a carrot fetish? Can we get some raisins with that?

What are you? Some kinda half-assed astronaut? Ya need more than a net to bring this monster home, Chief. I'll catch this melon for ya, but it ain't gonna be easy. Ya get a cart. Cart goes in the store. Melon's in the store. Our melon. There’s a two-for-one sale goin’ on and it's not gonna be pleasant. And we’re gonna need a bigger cart.

Our annual July 4th celebrations are marked by American patriotic fervor, rockets' red glare, bombs bursting in air – the birth of our nation in 1776! But there weren't many bombs bursting on that day back then. The July 4th holiday wasn't official until 1870. Interestingly, the Continental Congress declared independence on July 2nd, signed the document on August 2nd, and delivered to Great Britain later in November. July 4th happens to be the day that they finished up the editing and headed to City Tavern. All in favor, say aye!

Clean your mixer thoroughly, get rid of any trash, leaves or empty soda bottles. In large bowl, combine cement mix, air and water, sand, and gravel. Follow the 10-20-30-40 Rule. You could add pudding mix or eggs, depending if you want a taller, fluffier slab. Beat at medium speed in mixer for 2 minutes. Pour into a prepared formwork. Bake at 350. Drizzle with vanilla glaze.

Look at the size of that blueberry. No wee little berry here, if this Round starts spinning it will generate its own gravity. It had to be stabbed with a fork before it could get away. I'm tellin' ya, that's one huge fruit, a virtual planetoid orbiting the plate!

Pop open the beer and pound the bass drum, June 30th marks the Fifth Roundiversary of the official Round Museum opening back in 2016! Launched with 80 "objects" in four themed galleries, the museum collection has grown steadily every day since with 14 galleries and more than 1,600 Du Jours of just about every color, size and... well... you know what shape. We've been lucky enough to have more than 80 different contributors share their Round treasures and stories –– thanks so much to each of you! But, who's counting?

We've been hitting the century mark a lot this summer, as the heat has spiked around the country and people are sweltering in the triple digits. In the southwest, thermometers have stayed steady in the 100s, though nothing compared to the 120° projected for today in Death Valley, California. That's HOT! And that's why it's called Death Valley. July will mark the 108th anniversary of the hottest temperature ever recorded on the surface of the earth – you guessed it, here in Death Valley at Furnace Creek on July 10, 1913. The number? 134° Fahrenheit.

Despite the dire proverbs about old sins or small men, the long shadow of this glass is a sign of the early morning. This points to an encouraging new beginning with opportunity. And hopefully coffee.
