Round Museum

The Umbrella Sky Project was born in Agueda, Portugal, in 2012, developed by the creative agency Sextafeira Produções. The installation debuted in Pittsburgh at the 2017 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival as visitors flooded social media with colorful selfies and vibrant photography. Five years later, this new edition of the fan-favorite installation casts its canopy of color across the sky in downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District.

Machine Dazzle made these costumes for use by himself and others in a variety of performance contexts, from the street parade to the cabaret. Collectively, they demonstrate his distinctive, queer maximalist approach to design. Machine Dazzle has said, "I think you can change someone's life by walking across the room, wearing something very specific." For him, that something is delivered through the language of over-the-top, handcrafted design.

With a twist of orange peel garnish, the Lion’s Tail is a refreshing, aromatic Prohibition-era cocktail featuring bourbon, allspice dram made with pimento berries, Angostura bitters, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice. If you twist this lion's tail once, chances are you'll want to twist it again.

Squiggly and undulating, this Dale Chihuly glass sculpture is like the tentacles of an otherworldly squid reaching down from the atrium ceiling of the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. First installed for an extensive exhibit in 2007, it is one of several permanent pieces still on display.

It's eclipse season again, so if you were up early in the morning of November 8th, you probably witnessed the moon passing through the Earth's shadow, resulting in an eerie red haze seemingly swallowing the lunar surface. Sometimes called a Blood Moon, this is the second one in 2022, the first occurring in May.

The Octavius V. Catto Memorial honors a scholar, educator, Civil Rights activist, and athlete who was one of the most influential African American leaders in Philadelphia during the 19th century. Catto was an adamant activist for the abolition of slavery and establishment of equal rights for all, including the desegregation of Philadelphia’s public trolleys and ratification of the 15th amendment to the Constitution, which bars voting discrimination on the basis of race.

Invented in Norway in 1840, the glass fishing float was once used in many parts of the world to give buoyancy to fishing nets, sometimes strung together and set adrift in 50 mile lines. While no longer in use, there are still many of these Rounds floating around the world's oceans, in nautical museums or decorating beach houses.
