WREATH WEEK

Green and red abound at the holidays largely because evergreen plants such as holly represent the coming of spring even amid a cold, gray winter. The Druids would hang it in their homes for good luck and protection. Ancient Romans hung wreaths of holly, symbolizing death and rebirth during the winter solstice. And Christians saw the red berries and prickly leaves as representing the blood of Christ and his crown of thorns.

Boy, if Christmas Spirit could be bottled up somehow so you could have it for your very own, maybe trapping Santa in a globe would do the trick. Cookies and milk as some bait. BAM!

Time to get out the Christmas balls. A couple boxes for the tree. Maybe three or four small ones to hang on the wreath. And a super giant 10-footer with LED rainbow lights for the patio.

Ten-hut! Piping hot and right out of the oven, this company of snowmen has invaded the kitchen counter, cooling off in their ranks. Standing 144 strong, these soldiers are individually stacked, iced, with uniforms decoratively piped as they await deployment to The Annual Cookie Swap. Only 24 volunteers are needed for this delicious mission. There will be no return. But this heroic sacrifice will be acknowledged with the “Mint Bag of Flour” medal of honor. Fall out!!

'Tis the season! But if you haven't yet been jolly enough to get your Christmas tree, you still have some time. Out at the tree farm or down in the corner lot or over at the lawn & garden store, there's a selection of Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine, and Colorado Blue Spruce trees all lined up and ready to go. Just pick one. We'll net and bale it up tight and tie it to your car roof. Fa la la la la.

You wouldn't think Round cylinders stacked like cordwood would be stable, much less a decorative wall. Yet here we are. Just don't pull that bottom one out, or the Jenga will fall.

With Christmastime now in full fever mode -- parties, shopping, wrapping -- it's time to pull out the big guns. Glitter Encrusted Ho Ho Paper, anyone? No? Oh.

The holiday lights "competitions" begin just after Thanksgiving and should continue through the rest of December. NASA scientists have recently determined that nighttime lighting increases by 20 to 50 percent in U.S. cities and suburbs during the holidays. Take a tour down almost any street or neighborhood and you'll be awash in light-covered trees, snowmen, snowflakes, plastic Christmas characters, and maybe a twinkly Round planetoid or two. Bright enough to be visible from space, we just want to know who's paying the electric bill?
