Round Museum

The Petersen Rock Gardens in Redmond, Oregon, is a roadside attraction on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the creation of farmer and visionary Danish immigrant Rasmus Petersen, who settled here to farm in the early 1920s. By 1935, he had successfully cleared and irrigated 256 acres of land for grain and livestock, using equipment of the time— such as this logging wagon— and yielding a stockpile of rocks in the process.

The woody scales of a female pine cone radiate from a central axis in a floral array that belies its sharp, tough exterior. The scales open and close to control moisture and form the protective structure for seeds of conifer tree species. The pine cone is many things -- food for birds, squirrels and duckbill dinosaurs. A symbol across diverse religious cultures. The state flower of Maine. And, happily, a weapon to chuck at your little brother.

Or that Chucks own the honor as the first celebrity-endorsed athletic shoe way back in 1922. What makes the shoe are the tiny twin Round ventilation holes on the insole.

A walk in the woods reveals a vibrant purple gem amongst the brown fallen leaves. Common in North American oak forests, the viscid violet cort first emerges in the fall with a cap and stalk coated in a sticky slime. The cap will flatten out as it matures and develop yellow spots and streaks. While considered edible, it is not recommended for foraging because it's nearly identical to another mushroom that's not.
