Round Museum

The pursuit of notorious bank robber John Dillinger by federal agents probably looked something like this. One of many vehicles Dillinger used, the 1930 Ford Model A Phaeton with a rear mounted spare had a top speed of 60 miles per hour. Whoa, just slow down there, Johnny! From January through July 1934, Dillinger was chased, captured, imprisoned, escaped and hid out across nine different states, leaving a trail of robbed banks, crashed or abandoned cars, and dead compatriots in his wake.

It's hot outside, from the cloudless sky, to the triple-digit heat index, to the sunburst mosaic on the ground. As you gaze at the radial beauty of the colorful tiles, be sure to stand in a shady spot and hydrate frequently.

During eight days in July 1969, American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins piloted the Apollo 11 space flight to the moon and back. Armstrong became the first being (human, anyway) to step onto the lunar surface on July 20. He and Aldrin spent 21 hours collecting rock and soil samples at "Tranquility Base" while Collins flew the Columbia command module in orbit around this crater-faced Round.

“As American as apple pie” is a well known patriotic phrase that typically gets wrapped together with major national holidays, the stars and stripes, and Mom. Apple pie is a deliciously good symbol, but not only because of the flaky crust and sweet, fruity filling. Interestingly, the classic pie recipe and ingredients are derived from many places around the world -- the Netherlands, England, the Middle East, France, Germany, and as far away as Sri Lanka and Indonesia. So, this American pie is quite literally a melting pot.

The afternoon sun shines through the leaves of the trees outside the hallway window, creating layered disks of sparkling blurred light along the floor called "bokeh circles." Like a giant camera lens, the double paned window glass and the angle of light diffracting through results in the optical effect. From certain points of view, the bokeh appear as elongated ellipses, but from this angle as perfect Rounds. A very pleasant bokeh, indeed.

Why climb a mountain? Because it is there of course! For avid geocachers, it's also to find the Round medallion on top. The US Geological Survey places brass or metal benchmark monuments, or "stations", to provide latitude, longitude or orthometric height as a point of reference for surveyors, hikers and climbers. The National Geodetic Survey manages more than 240,000 stations in the United States, including this one on top of Bald Mountain in Utah, part of the Uinta Mountain Range.

The shape you choose build with is a decision based on circumstance. In many ways a seamless, round structure is ideal as there will be even distribution of stress along the surfaces, while other shapes with edges and corners can become fatigued and crack. If you are a bee, this approach doesn't apply. A hexagonal shape fits together perfectly to hold the most weight with no gaps between.
