The fate of 115 colonists of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, North Carolina has been a mystery since 1590 when John White returned from England and found the settlement abandoned. The prevailing theory is that they left to live with the native Croatoan in order to survive, and there is some recent evidence of English pottery, a sword hilt and gun found at archeological sites 50 miles to the southeast and northwest. Archeologists have not found evidence supporting the theory of the massive 100-keg party and settlers wandering off in a drunken stupor.
