The King's Inner Hall in Stirling Castle, Scotland is a prestigious room with a ceiling decorated with the famous Stirling Heads carvings. This was where the King held audiences with ambassadors, courtiers and nobles. The hall was designed for James V, and the Stirling Heads declared his status and wealth as a European monarch, his royal bloodline, his powerful connections, his fashionable court and his aspiration to be a wise and virtuous ruler. The original carvings were removed when the ceiling began to collapse in 1777. Craftsman John Donaldson spent five years carving 37 replica Stirling Heads currently on display. They were painted with paints made using traditional techniques after being fixed to the ceiling.
