Spanning The Continent Round
The Central Terrace of the Ellen Phillips Samuel Memorial in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia features three sculptures representing the history of America: Welcoming of Immigrants, Slavery Emancipation and Westward Expansion. This bronze sculpture of a man and the woman with a wheel between them and ax in hand, is called "Spanning the Continent", and depicts the self-determination of the pioneers. Created by French sculptor Robert Laurent, this was the first installed at the Memorial in 1938.
