On Sunday February 26th, 2017, the southern hemisphere of the US was able to witness an annular solar eclipse. While in a total solar eclipse the moon blocks the sun entirely, an annular eclipse occurs when the moon is a bit farther from the Earth and therefore doesn't provide full coverage. What's observed is a circular sliver of sunlight around the edges, Johnny Cash's burning "ring of fire" in the sky.
