Quite Literally A Peace Sign Round
Peace, baby. Flower Power. All rolled into one big expressive metal sign here on the sidewalk in Old City. There are many symbols for peace -- an olive branch, a dove, a flower, a broken rifle -- and the peace sign which became ubiquitous in the 60s and 70s was originally created in 1958 for a British movement for nuclear disarmament. The designer, Gerald Holtom, created it using a combination of the semaphore flag signals for the letters "N" (an inverted V) and "D" (a vertical line), as well as a representation of a person's hands outstretched outwards and downwards. Peace out.
