Pier 5 Round
This Art Deco styled facade at the entry of Pier 5 in Philadelphia is a reflection of its beginnings in 1922. Now converted to modern condominiums, this large industrial steel super-structure was first built to attract large ocean-going cargo ships in an effort to boost the port business. Initially, with local river steamers and coastal vessels using the pier, the city had difficulty attracting the cargo business. Finally in 1923, the first big ship docked at the pier and unloaded its cargo.... 80,000 cases of Hawaiian pineapple.
