Venture down under the streets in New York City Subway's 14th Street/Eighth Avenue station and you'll discover a population of little, whimsical, bronze figures hanging around the benches and platforms like "scattered little surprises." This well-dressed little man with a sweet, forlorn expression sits holding a giant money bag, like a lost Monopoly game piece. Conceived by sculptor Tom Otterness and installed in 2001, the cute, cartoon-like people and animals all depict "a common theme of implied criminality mixed with an undercurrent of social anarchy," wrote art critic Olympia Lambert.
