Tlingit & Haida invited tribal citizen artists to submit artwork reflecting the 14 Southeast Alaska Tribal Values. These Tribal Values remain the foundation of how we live, lead, and serve tribal citizens. They reflect the wisdom of our Elders and the strength of a collective vision. This depiction represents the wolf being in over its head and challenging someone who is up to the task. The man’s spear is behind him, driven into the wolf, while the wolf bites the man’s hand, which is holding the wolf’s face down. I considered the most courageous act I could imagine, and fighting a wolf one-on-one was the rawest image I could think of. Wolves are massive and intimidating. It would take a brave and strong hero to face one alone.
