To weight a heaving line and make it easier to throw between a ship and the dock, a monkey fist knot is the perfect Round for the job. The lightweight heaving line is tied to a heavier-weight mooring line to allow crew to draw it to the mooring cleats. The monkey fist is a single cord wrapped around a small marble or sphere in three different directions and tightened to create the woven, fist-like form.
