In New England, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF) preserves the dry-harvesting tradition of cranberry collection at Milestone Bog as part of the 9,000 acres it protects on the island. If you partake in one of NCF’s seasonal walking tours you’ll hear the storied traditions of cranberry farming that expanded on the island after the 1846 Great Fire that burned most of the whale oil and candlery businesses to the ground. When you explore the dry bogs, you’ll discover cranberries are 1 of 3 indigenous berries (blueberry and fox grape are the others), and you can see harvesting and a vintage sorting machine in action. Do you know how to tell the difference between a good cranberry and a bad cranberry? Hint: these Rounds are only good ones.
