Unisphere Round
Rising up from behind the tree line in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens, NY, the stainless steel, 120-ft diameter Unisphere is an enduring monument from the 1964 New York World's Fair. The massive globe was designed by Gilmore D. Clarke to celebrate the beginning of the space age and as a central symbol of global interdependence. It is supported by a 20-ft tripod base and surrounded by a 310-ft diameter reflecting pool. There are five hundred countries made from steel, and three steel rings swirl around the Earth as orbiting satellites.
