Yayoi Kusama's lifetime work has been characterized by paintings, sculptures, installations, and happenings that utilize dots, net-like patterns, and compulsively repeated shapes. She began her career as a painter, and showed in numerous group and solo shows in Japan before moving to New York in 1958. As an active member of New York's avant-garde, she staged numerous well-publicized happenings, at which she painted dots on herself, other artists, her friends, and the public.
