Sarah Vaughan’s Pop Artistry Round
Sarah Lois Vaughan was an American jazz singer who made her debut in the early 1940s by winning the Apollo Theater Amateur Night contest. She soon was hired as a singer by the Earl Hines Big Band, performing along side trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonist Charlie Parker. Nicknamed "Sassy", in her long career she released 48 studio albums, ten live albums, and 35 compilation albums, winning four Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. "Pop Artistry" was her 31st album released in 1966 featuring songs written by Burt Bacharach, Bill Gaither, and a little ditty called "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
