We are creatures that collect. Whether displayed in grand marbled galleries or dusty window sills, things that we cherish and want to share have value. How about a glazed ceramic Ward's Orange Crush drink-syrup dispenser from the 1920s? Andy Warhol cherished it -- along with hundreds of thousands of other objects. From the 1950s until his untimely death in 1987 he raised collecting to an art form, gathering an eclectic breadth and depth of stuff from the finest of fine art to the kitchiest of flea market bargains, and stuffed his 30-room New York townhouse to the rafters with it all. In the end, all critics agree this was all about his eye -- an interest in things without any prejudice or preconceived idea of what they should look like or from where they come.
