The holidays and lighthouses have one thing in common: both have magical, mysterious qualities that some might call supernatural. At Brant Point lighthouse in Nantucket, local lore says if you drop a coin in the water, you’ll soon return. But what if you don’t? At Eilean Mòr lighthouse on the Flannan Isles off the coast of Scotland, the lore involves disappearances from a haunted island. Around Christmas in 1900, the three lighthouse keepers vanished without a trace. What happened? Did they leave of their own accord? Turned into crows for violating the magic of the island? Were aliens to blame? Did they lose a rhyming duel against Scottish water sprites na fir ghorma -- the Blue Men of the Minch? Who knows? The 120th anniversary of their disappearance is on December 26th, so a suggestion this Christmas is… stay away from lighthouses.
