It's Opening Day in the Major Leagues today, and the hopes and dreams for 30 teams begin with the first pitch, first inning, first game. How will it start, and where will it end? Maybe with a signed baseball. On Opening Day in 1979, the game went well for Willie Stargell who batted 2 for 4, but the Pittsburgh Pirates lost 3-2 to the Montreal Expos. With a slow start in the first month of the season, the Pirates' high hopes were in question. But, they came on when it counted and won the World Series over the Baltimore Orioles when Stargell hit a dramatic home run late in game 7 to seal it. His dream season earned him the MVP of the NLCS, the World Series and the Major Leagues, the only player to have won all three trophies in a single year. Nice ending!
