For 192 years the Visitation Academy served as a Catholic girls' school and convent in Frederick, Maryland, until its closing in 2016. Founded as the St. John's Benevolent Female Free School in 1824, its operation was taken over on September 11, 1846 by the Visitation Sisters from Georgetown, Washington, DC. The central architectural feature is a Corinthian style chapel with 19th-century German stained glass, statues, and an intricate marble altar. The property was sold in 2017 and redeveloped into a hotel with meticulous preservation of significant architectural elements. The Wye Oak Tavern is a restaurant now occupying the chapel space, which was formally deconsecrated by church officials ensuring respect for its sacred history.
