King George IV of England lived a decadent lifestyle, rebelling against his strict upbringing by drinking, womanizing and gambling. He loved good things and spent extravagantly on fashions, paintings and sculptures, architecture and decorative art, ringing up quite a bit of debt. In the late 1700s he set about transforming The Brighton Royal Pavilion into a lavish seaside villa, choosing Chinese furniture and objects, and hand-painted wallpapers and light fixtures.
