What Was Old Is New Again Round
Originating in the early 1800s as a "new" type of drink, legend has it that the Old Fashioned was the first cocktail ever made -- whiskey mixed with Angostura bitters, a cube of sugar muddled in water, a twist of citrus and served on ice. But it wasn't an Old Fashioned when it was new; it was a Whiskey Cocktail. As the popularity of cocktails grew, more new recipes popped up using different kinds of exotic liqueurs and fancy enhancers to satisfy the crowds; to the point where old-time barflies rejected the new and requested just the "old-fashioned." And the name stuck.
