Happy Mother's Day! All across the U.S. people honor their mothers and motherhood on this special day. First celebrated in 1908, the holiday was conceived by Anna Jarvis as a memorial to her mother in West Virginia. The tradition grew and by 1911 it had become an annual American observance, with mothers in every state showered with gifts, cards, luncheons and flowers. The carnation is frequently associated with the holiday, however roses, daisies and many other varieties bring color to the day.
