Summer Solstice at the Sun Tunnels Round
Deep in a remote, sweltering valley in the Great Basin Desert, near the Utah-Nevada line, and about 45 miles north of Wendover is a mysterious monument of Round structures. Four 22-ton concrete cylinders, each nine feet high, are aligned in a particular arrangement with the sun's rising and setting on the summer and winter solstices. For 43 years visitors have made pilgrimages to these tunnels, each drilled with holes in definitive patterns. Who built this structure? And for what purpose? To what end?... Sun Tunnels ... an art and astronomy exhibit created by Nancy Holt and a collaboration of engineers, astronomers, pipe manufacturers, drillers, truck drivers, and others. That's who!
